Russia stars in  Mipcom 2011


Mipcom’s week saw 12,500 delegates from 4,211 companies and 102 countries gathered in and around the Palais des Festivals and cross-border deal-making moved into overdrive. The new reality was summed up by Disney Media Networks Co-Chair and Disney/ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney in her MIPCOM keynote address. “The lines between content and technology are blurring. Digital technology didn’t disrupt our business, it transformed it. Digital didn’t weaken the power of television, it unleashed it.” According to Anne Sweeney, the global television audience will grow to 3.7 billion people this year and television viewing will increase by a staggering 140 billion hours in 2011. “Television is the medium around which all others revolve,” she told MIPCOM delegates.

Mipcom honored this year Russia to for the first time. Participants then had the opportunity to discover the wealth of audiovisual contents from this huge country and make contacts to sell entertainment programs or forge agreements for international co-productions. Russia counts 330 television channels to be supplied by local and international productions. Some 160 Russian companies were present at Mipcom.

Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, making his inaugural visit to MIPCOM, has thrown his directorial experience behind FCCE’s multi-platform, user-generated film-making project ‘The Entertainment Experience.’ The innovative concept invites the public to take over scriptwriting, acting, producing, scoring, special effects and game development starting from three minutes of a movie submitted by Dutch actress and scriptwriter Kim van Kooten.

American stars abounded also in Mipcom to present productions they star in: Ashley Judd was there for the world-premiere screening of the first episode of Missing, Kiefer Sutherland came for the 24 Hours Chrono premiere, Fran Drescher presented the new sitcom Happily Divorced and rapper Common supported the new western series Hell On Wheels. Enough to provide a beautiful Red Carpet for the Mipcom Opening Party at Martinez Hotel.

Paul Verhoven appeals to universal Talent

With its rich cultural heritage and fast growing media industry, Russia was MIPCOM’s official spotlight country. World-famous documentarist Yann Arthus-Bertrand launched in Cannes Mipcom a royalty-free production company called «Hope». Following up on his world-success film “Home” and his various audiovisual projects, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has created a new structure, Hope Production. This new company, born from his meeting with Jean-Yves Robin (Robin & Co), will be entirely dedicated to major international environmental issues.

Colmax TV: a certain idea of pleasure

Warner Bros partners with Miptv


The US major, that started renting films through Facebook was presenting all its catalogue for television on its paradisiacal stand on one of the most prestigious the beach facing the Mediterranean in front of Hotel Majestic. Sam Register announced the development of a sitcom format based on Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck sharing an apartment and WBITP announced his sponsoring of next Miptv Fresh Talent Pitch.

Pan Am flies towards success


At Mipcom, Sony Pictures TV unveiled PAN AM, from writer Jack Orman (ER) and director Thomas Schlamme (The West Wing), a new series taking audiences back to the 1960s. The storyline begins in 1963 and focuses on stewardesses and pilots working for the world-famous airline, when travel was glamorous, stewardesses were all young and beautiful.

Missing, ABC network's new action series


Disney Media Distribution, the international TV and digital distribution arm of The Walt Disney Company, has announced international TV licensing agreements for the midseason ABC Studios drama series “Missing,” starring Ashley Judd, with the thriller sold so far to over 80 territories. The series, filmed this summer in Prague, Dubrovnik and Istanbul, had its World Premiere Screening at MIPCOM on Monday October 3.

Alain Siritzky Productions (A.S.P) is an American production company based in Los Angeles and specializing in sexy movies. At Mipcom, A.S.P. introduced its new erotic films, a collection of seven 90-minute TV movies called « Emmanuelle: Through time ». This time around, it is the pretty Brittany Joy who embodies the mythical heroine. Thanks to a revolutionary process called Telcast, these seven movies can be viewed in 2D or 3D on all types of screens...
