The Caméra d’Or


Created by Gilles Jacob in 1978, the Camera d’Or is awarded to the best film among all first films shown in all the selections. This important award, which can only be won once in a career, has been awarded to well known directors such as Romain Goupil (Half a Life), Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise), Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay), Vitali Kanevski (Freeze, Die, Come To Life), Jaco Van Dormael (Toto the Hero), John Turturro (Mac), Tran Ahn Hung (The Scent of Green Papaya), Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon), Pascale Ferran (Coming to Terms with the Dead), Naomi Kawaze (Suzaku), Bahman Ghobadi (A Time for Drunken Horses), Keren Yedaya (Or - My Treasure), Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of Bucharest), Steve McQueen (Hunger)  and last year it was awarded to Michael Rowe (Leap Year).

23 films are competing this year: 8 in the Official Selection, 8 in the Director’s Fortnight and 8 in the Critic’s Week. The Jury is presided by the Korean director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother) and also includes Danièle Heymann (French critic), Eva Vezer (Hungarian General Manager of Magyar Filmunio), Robert Alazraki (French director of photography), Daniel Colland (Head of the laboratory Ciné Dia France), Jacques Maillot (French director) and Alex Masson (French critic).
