midem offered a sumptuous Classical Night on Monday 30 January in the Mediterranean Hall of JW Marriott Hotel in Cannes. The gala evening featured world-renowned UK artists: Alison Balsom (trumpet), Behzod Abduraimov (piano), Mari Samuelsen (violin) and Hâkon Samuelsen (cello) accompanied by the ORCPACA Orchestra conducted by Philippe Bender.

Alison Balsom


Recently crowned ‘Female Artist of the Year’ for the second time at the Classic BRITs, Alison Balsom has cemented an international reputation as one of classical music’s great ambassadors and is ranked among the most distinctive and ground-breaking musicians on the international circuit today. Balsom has also been honoured with numerous awards by Classic FM, Gramophone and ECHO Klassik.

Behzod Abduraimov


Behzod Abduraimov was born in Tashkent in 1990 and began to play the piano at the age of five. At the age of 18, Behzod achieved a sensational victory in the 2009 London International Piano Competition, winning first prize with his thrilling performance of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3.

Mari and Hakon Samuelsen


The remarkable rise of Norwegian siblings Mari (violin, 26) and Håkon (cello, 29) Samuelsen is the result of their artistry and enterprise. "A Christmas Concert" from Norway, showcases their musicianship alongside the five-time Grammy-nominated Trondheim Soloists and a host of international talent.

Philippe Bender


He was born to Besançon where he began his musical studies before going on the Paris Conservatoire where he won in 1959 three first prizes. On leaving the Paris Conservatoire he studied at the Höchschule für Musik of Fribourg en Brisgau and then at the Julliard Music School in New York, from which he graduated with a music degree. As a concert flautist he was a prize-winner at the international music competitions of Geneva, Munich and Montreux. (ORCPACA, France)


Orchestre regional de Cannes PACA


The orchestra, led by Philippe Bender, has achieved a level of artistic prowess which rivals other similar institutions in the international arena, such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the Paris Orchestral Ensemble, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra... In 2005, The Victoires de la Musique Classique awarded Philippe Bender and the Orchestra a Victoire d’honneur for all their work together.
