65th Festival de Cannes Day 3

Paradise:Liebe by Ulrich Seidl

On the beaches of Kenya they‘re known as “Sugar Mamas:” European women who seek out African boys selling love to earn a living. Teresa, a 50-year-old Austrian and mother of a daughter entering puberty, travels to this vacation paradise. She goes from one Beach Boy to the next, from one disappointment to the next and finally she must recognize: on the beaches of Kenya love is a business. “Paradise: Love” tells not without humor of sex tourism, older women and young men, the market value of sexuality, the power of skin color, Europe and Africa, and the exploited, who have no choice but to exploit others. Ulrich Seidl‘s film is the opener in the Paradise Trilogy about three women in one family who take separate vacations: one as a sex tourist, another as a Catholic missionary (“Paradise: Faith”) and the third at a diet camp for teenagers (“Paradise: Hope”). Three films, three women, three stories of the longing to find happiness today.

The Central Park Zoo has come to the Festival de Cannes. Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo and Melman the Giraffe present Madagascar 3, Europe’s Most Wanted in the Out of Competition selection.

Madagascar 3 is the 5th DreamWorks film to be presented at Cannes following Shrek and Over the Hedge. The directors of the first two films, Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath are joined by Conrad Vernon as they follow the European adventures of the 4 wildest animals from Central Park. In our first meeting with them, they escaped from the New York City zoo and ended up on a distant island. In Madagascar 2, they left this island and made their way to Africa. Now in Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted, as they try to return to New York, they wind up in… Monte Carlo. With Animal Control on their tails, they find the perfect hide-out, a travelling circus.
