Special screening of Marek Halter’s last film in Cannes


The Jewish community, under the patronage of the City of Cannes, organized during the Festival de Cannes, a special screening of Marek Halter's film, Birobidzhan Birobidzhan!. This is the amazing story of a Jewish Republic in Siberia, on the border of China, on the Amur River. In this astonishing film, Marek Halter crosses the streets of this city of the Russian Far East, interviews its residents in search of his past and his mother tongue, Yiddish, the language he believed missing and is still taught to Russian, Chinese and Korean children in public schools of Birobidzhan. The evening, sponsored by the City of Cannes, France Televisions, the Nice Matin Groupe, France Culture, Robert Laffont and the Community Activities Center of Cannes and Region, with the complicity of MB Group Moscow and Channel One Russian television, was held on Sunday, May 20 at the Moss-Kahn cultural Space, boulevard d'Alsace in Cannes. The screening was followed by a discussion with the author, then a cocktail party during which Marek Halter has dedicated his latest novel "The Unknown of Birobidzhan" (ed. Robert Laffont).
